Clinical aspects of corneal trachoma.
Classification of trachoma by site rather than density of opacities is better related to visual prognosis and helps in selection for graft surgery. The cases are divided into 3 groups: peripheral corneal opacities, central corneal opacities, and diffuse corneal opacities (ground-glass cornea). A central lesion has the poorest prognosis, especially in children.

249 Eduard Zirm performed the first successful allogeneic corneal transplant in 1905,[1] making this corneal graft a pioneering event in early organ transplantation.[2] Despite this long history, our knowledge of corneal immune function and graft rejection pathophysiology and its prevention are lagging in comparison to solid organ transplantation. This is, to some extent, due to a misunderstand...
متن کاملHistorical Aspects of Endemic Trachoma in Peru: 1895–2000
Trachoma, a chronic keratoconjunctivitis caused by the intracellular bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, is the leading infectious cause of blindness and affects the most underprivileged populations worldwide. An estimated 1.3 million people have been blinded, and there are more than 50 trachoma-endemic countries, mainly in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia [1,2]. In Latin America, countries such ...
متن کاملAspects of corneal changes in onchocerciasis.
The distribution of living and dead microfilariae in 160 cases of ocular onchocerciasis has been studied. A model for coding the densities in 9 different areas of the cornea has been used. The average numbers of microfilariae and onchocercal punctate opacities per square millimetre were assessed. The highest densities were found in the superficial one-third of the corneal stroma at the peripher...
